Day and Night

Although I am not a huge fan of sleet and snow, winter has its own particular beauty. As I was watching the birds in my front yard, I realized that although it was still a bit chilly from the recent winter storm, I could actually see the sun setting through the trees. The awe of the moment: beautiful blue sky, fluffy clouds and the glow of sunlight filling the air.

About that moment is when "my" little woodpecker flew off to the woods and much to my surprise, there was the moon! How cool is that? The sun breaking through the clouds on the west and the moon rising through the trees on the east. What an amazing moment and what an even more Amazing Creator! I am so glad I happened to be at the right spot at that very moment!

A Rainy Afternoon's Adventure

While I was on the porch this afternoon taking pictures of rain-soaked birds, I happened to notice the field across from our house was flooded. Water was creating mini creeks everywhere. I could only imagine the water flowing from the cave. So when Dad said, Hey, do you want to me ride out with you to the cave...I immediately started gathering camera equipment (while he gathered his fishing pole and skeeter hat! Go Figure!)

The amount of water flowing across the field, down the creek, creating whirling currents that instilled momentary fear. I sure did not want to get to the edge today! I would hate to be swept away! The power of the mighy water, surging, continuously, ever coming, wave upon wave.

My dad had to do his little bit of fishing while we are standing out there in the downpour but, hey, he came along with me on this adventure. So I let him do a little fishing, catch the scary "Pink Critter of the Cave", and climb down banks for the perfect photo op! He just had to show off His Skeeter Hat! Remember, pouring down rain...

After a few more pictures, we started home but was momentarily distracted by the triple waterfall flowing down the neighbor's yard and drive. So we decided to drive a little farther down the road, just to see what we could see and there was plenty. Old bridges and barns, flooding everywhere, trees covered, turkeys in the field. Beauty and destruction, all within the power of water!

By the time, we did arrive home, guess what? Yes, there was not a dry thread on us but there were smiles on our faces!

The Scott County Shooters Exhibit

Last evening, Jeanette and I went to Georgetown to support some photography friends. The Scott County Shooters' (and, no, this group has nothing to do with guns or hunting!) is a group of talented and yet diverse photographers. Jeanette and I both ooohed and ahhhed over so many of the prints. From churches, exotic birds, horses (of course, Georgetown is home to many horse farms), beaches, landscapes, and even jails, I couldn't choose a favorite picture if I had too. Well, maybe one, the Tybee Lighthouse print just totally blew me away. If I did not know it was a photograph, I would have thought it was a painting.

Although I don't know all of the featured photographers, I do know several including some of the ladies who have contribued a ton of time and effort into making this a successful exhibit: Dewanna Marcum, Brenda Fogle and Ida Marcum...you ladies have done yourself proud!

After visiting for a little bit, Jeanette and I took our leave with a couple detours of our own. First, the Georgetown Arts and Cultural Center is housed in a beautiful older brick building with stained glass windows. We just couldnt resist having our own little photoshoot outside. Then we went across the road to check out the log cabin by the water. Having never driven through downtown Georgetown and not knowing much about the area, I was very impressed. From the clock tower on the courthouse, the college campus, to the Royal Springs flowing through the park, Georgetown seems to offer a bountiful supply of scenic opportunities. So many I may have to return on a sunny day.

So, if you happen to be in the area, be sure to visit the Scott County Arts and Cultural at 117 North Water Street. I am sure you will enjoy this exhibit as well as other upcoming exhibits. Or if you are a photographer looking for an opportunity to learn with others, I am sure the Scott County Shooters would welcome you.

Until next time...

And The Rains Arrive...

After the melting of recent snow and showers upon showers of rain that we have received this week, water is definitely flowing from the cave at Sand Springs.

Flowing water whether it is waterfalls, creeks, lakes, or ocean waves, is one of my favorite scenes to photograph so, of course, I couldn't resist.

There is just something so powerful about the water rushing by, unmindful of obstructions hindering its path, focused on its destination, and seemingly an unending flow.

Since I was by myself, I was a little more cautious and kind of wished I wasn't alone when several cars slowed down. I couldn't help but wonder if they were looking at this crazy photographer in high heels (yes, I was not prepared for adventure this evening but gotta capture the moments) scrambling down the bank to the waters' edge...OR was there something else going on around the bend. I never did find out but I did take these pictures in a bit of a hurry.

This picturesque spot is one whose beauty draws folks in all seasons. The green moss is ever present, the stately trees provide shelter and security. And there is just something about a creek, that seems to bring out the kid out in all of us.

Hope you enjoy them as much I enjoyed taking them!

Quiet Snow

Last night when I arrived home from work, the snow was pouring down and the birds were getting the last few bites of the evening. As I pulled up a rocker on the porch to try to get the best angle, I couldn't help but marvel at the quiet beauty. With the birds chirping and wind gently blowing chimes, I totally had to capture the moment. May you enjoy it as well!

Old Man Winter Arrives

Another cold, snowy morning and the weather forecast for this this week is not improving. Is this what January holds for Kentucky? If so, this girl is not looking forward to winter. I must say that if I wasn't having to drive in it, I would marvel at the beauty. As I was going to work this morning, I knew the rippling stream coming from the Sand Springs Cave would be a cool sight but it was breathtaking. The snow layered on the moss covered rocks, the water trickling on its pathway (and I couldn't even apply the brakes for a quick picture!)Thankfully, most of the snow and icy spots melted from the roadway so I was able to make a pit stop by the cave this evening on the way back home. The setting sun reflecting on the snow covered fields lit up the mountains like a forest fire shimmering in the shadows. Another day, another memory!

The Snowbirds Arrive!

So this morning we woke up to an unexpected snow, after bundling up, I went out to take some pictures. Suddenly, I heard some clucking and squawking...my first thought that a squirrel was out in the bitter cold. Then I saw it take flight. A beautiful young woodpecker!

This young fellow started an afternoon of preparing bird feeders and making suet. I do have my problems trying to care for my feather friends. Do you know who had to climb the tree and check out the pan of suet...yes, the old gray cat! Does anyone want to give a cat a home? I was so shocked that I could not even take a picture of the scene. I was not happy with the cat to say the least.

Dad tried to help me out by going outside blowing his duck call. Yes, a duck whistle to call birds? But maybe it worked...because in just a little bit, here they came. My little woodpecker, Cardinals, Titmouses, and Nuthatches! Flitting here and there, fighting over the food, a little nervous, wondering if this dinner was real. I was so excited to say the least!! Each one so unique and memorable in their own way. I have a feeling a bird book is in my future...do you know how many times I have asked my Mom and Grandma...what kind of bird did you say that was?

Here is just a few pictures of the birds arriving in the snow! I am sure, like the hummingbirds of summer, that there will be more! (but may I ask, what crazy person, hides on the porch, in the snow, in 20 degree weather, trying to get a picture of bird?) Just a thought!

The Glories of Winter!

On this the first day of a brand new year, 2010, I am dedicating this blog to pictures I have taken and am taking along with their stories. A picture is worth a thousand words. But hopefully, I won't have to use that many but will, instead, allow the pictures to speak for themselves!

In the midst of winter with barren trees and brown fields, where does the beauty lie? I find beauty in the midst of the setting sun. I enjoy sunsets of any kind and anywhere but there is a difference in the beauty of a winter sunset. Maybe it is because there is not the competition of life in full swing but a more sedate sleepyness prevailing the land. Being the sun sets early and the moon is rising before I even leave work, winter presents the best of both worlds. These are two of my favorite shots from last week on my way home from work.

Enjoy! ~C~
