2009 has been an amazing year for me!! January started out with hopes and expectations but, like most new year's to do list of resolutions, it kind of fizzled out to ordinary day by day responsibilities until April! Until the day I started my first blog! Unknowingly, this blog began a whole new chapter in my life. The day I stepped out on a limb by faith...I mean who would take time to read my jumbling thoughts and find it interesting?
2009...Visits with Friends ~ A Spring visit to Biltmore. a summer trip with the girls to Chimney Rock and our chance encounter with Elfin the White Squirrel, Chimney Rock. Then onto Charlotte to see the Phantom of the Opera and adventure at the Latta Plantation.
2009...Family ~ Blessed with several visits with Kevin, Donna and the boys this year making precious memories. First, we celebrated Dawson's 9th birthday in Kentucky with snow and sledding. A summer visit to Shallotte which included miniature golfing and the awesome boat ride. Celebrating Jaden's and Keagan's birthday in August with parties and more parties plus a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. Then unexpected visits with them in October and December due to loss.
2009...Conferences ~ From Terre Haute to Nashville, Tn, conferences as different as can be but both spiritually uplifting, full of worship and the Word!
2009 ~ Connecting with old friends and new friends on social networking sites
2009 ~ Central Ky Photography Group - In August, another new chapter of my life and dream come true: joining a local photography group and enjoying my new Rebel camera. Through this group I feel I have grown so much in my skills as a would-be photographer.
2009 ~ Clarissa's Corner - Photography & More! I would never have guessed that I would now be selling my photographs as greeting cards and prints. Photography has always been a hobby but this year it has blossomed into a wondrous hopeful experience. Who knows what successes the coming year will bring to this venture?
The year has not been all joy, wonder and victory...there have been moments of grief as we mourn the passing of Aunt Dorothy, and Donna's Grandfather, and several close friends. It's the patchwork quilt of life...change, the ordinary, hope, new life, sorrow, death...what a wonderful life!
What does 2010 hold in store for us? Only the Lord knows and I am so glad we are trusting him to lead and guide us! My dad retired today so he will be adjusting to a new chapter in his life's story. Jeanette and I are scheduled to go on a cruise in April with some very good friends. I am sure there will be many more stories and pictures to share! Possibly having a start ANOTHER blog to share all the Adventures!!
May the Lord bless you and yours in the coming year! Happy New Year!! ~ C ~

Merry Christmas from our family to yours.
As we celebrate on this day, I wanted to share the story of the birth of Christ with you. May we always remember the day a babe came to this earth to save a world!
"The Christmas Story" King James Version

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and The Government shall be upon His Shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty GOD, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His Government and peace there shall be no end, upon the Throne of David, and upon His Kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will perform this"
(Isaiah 9:6-7).
The Story of the Birth of Christ (As told through Luke)
Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2:2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 2:3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 2:5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with Child. 2:6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the LORD came upon them, and the glory of the LORD shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the LORD. 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the Babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into Heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the LORD hath made known unto us. 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 2:17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 2:18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the Child, His Name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

The Story of the Birth of Christ (As told through Matthew)
Matthew 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, Who is called Christ. 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as His mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with Child of the Holy Ghost. 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 1:21 And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His Name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the LORD by the prophet, saying, 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with Child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His Name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God With Us. 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the LORD had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn Son: and he called His Name JESUS.
2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king,
behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2:2 Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews?
for we have seen His Star in the east, and are come to worship Him. 2:3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 2:4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 2:5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 2:6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule My people Israel. 2:7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the Star appeared. 2:8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young Child; and when ye have found Him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship Him also. 2:9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the Star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 2:10 When they saw the Star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

When I was just a little girl, I memorized a quote for Christmas. Although I can’t remember whether it was for a school performance, church pageant or just for a family gathering, the quote has stuck with me all these years.
The gift you give another need not be a costly thing,
If you tuck a little love as you tie the string.
As I watch people worry, and fret over their Christmas shopping lists. Hurrying, scurrying from store to store for the perfect gift or that special must-have can’t live without toy of the season, I wonder if we’ve forgotten the real meaning of Christmas. Christmas is a time to remember the birth of Saviour, the one who came to live and to die in order to GIVE life and life abundantly.
In order to honor this, the ultimate gift, how can we give of ourselves this holiday season? Surely you know someone who will not be having a joyous Christmas without the help of friends and neighbors. Many folks are laid off or out of work, families are facing life-threatening illness and overwhelming medical bills, and how many more are facing foreclosure? What about our military families? With war on so many fronts, many families will be missing family members around the table this Christmas dinner?
Last weekend (while I was out doing the Christmas shopping thing ), Jeanette and I stopped by Chick-Fil-A for breakfast and witnessed a touching scene. Kids with grandparents and young families were being treated to lunch by State Troopers and their wives before taking them on a shopping spree. These children will remember that day for a very long while. Another group who make a difference in the lives of children is the Marines with their Toys for Tots programs. And they are not alone, firefighters, police as well as churches, area businesses and individual families are all helping meet the needs of families.
As I sit here in the SICU waiting room, I heard the story of some teachers at Wilson Elementary in Ohio who asked their students to forego presents to them. Instead of spending the money on the teachers, they asked the students to donate money to purchase food and diapers to help out a local mission. These students raised $1,400.00 and today met their teachers at a local store to choose the items and take them to the mission. What a lesson of giving for all involved!
One of my favorite radio stations, K-Love and Big Daddy Weave teamed up to make a difference for some military families throughout the United States who had needs this Christmas. The “Be Brave This Christmas” project as well as the news of many more troops being deployed to Afghanistan during the holidays have greatly touched me. My heart goes out to these families and our troops who are sacrificing so much.
The needs seem so overwhelming…what can I do to make a difference? I am only one person. It’s not too late…you too can make a difference! There’s still time to serve Christmas dinner at a mission, make up a food basket for the shut-in or a family out of work, visit the elderly at the nursing home, buy a coat or a toy for a child… Get creative!
These needs are not just limited to Christmas eve and Christmas day, but I pray in the spirit of giving…each day…reach out to someone in need.
Remember, the gift you give another need not be a costly thing..just use a little wisdom and lots of love!

When I think of December, my mind automatically thinks of Christmas celebrations, fun-filled snowy days, decking the halls, family gatherings in front of the fireplace, gifts galore, and lots of laughter. The joyous songs of the seasons, adorable children in memorable Christmas pageants, and choirs lifting their voices in Christmas cantatas.
However, is it so in every household this December? I think not! In this season of peace and joy, let us not forget the families who would like to cut this month from the calendar. Families who have been torn apart through divorce, illness, or the passing of a loved one. There is an empty seat around these tables this holiday season, a missing voice, that special touch which creates a heart shaped hole of longing.
My own family and several dear friends have suffered the great loss of close family members this year. Some deaths arrived without warning taking us off-guard and by surprise. Oh yes, we are thankful that they didn’t suffer but how we miss them. Other loved ones passed their final days surrounded by loved ones. Some were taken tragically and at a young age. But grief knows no age. Plans are interrupted and dreams unfulfilled. Even now, there are those, close friends and family members, that we know may not be here for our next holiday season. The shadow of grief looms in background of even this year’s gatherings allowing us to make the most of each moment we have with them.
My prayer for us, and my prayer for you and your loved ones, this holiday season is that we gather and savor our memories, some may yet be too painful or bittersweet, but it is through these precious memories that we gather bouquets of roses even in December. We have a hope for a future reunion but this day we selfishly wish for one more moment with our loved ones. Let us not forget those left behind who are in need of our love, support, kindness and understanding this season.
And if you are one of those left behind, know there are those around who remember and who are waiting for the one word from you to remember as well. There is healing in remembrance and tears. You are not alone.
If this holiday season you would like to share your memories with others, I am opening a space on my blog for those special memories. Please feel free to come and share with us.
Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all. I Thessalonians 3:16

Although we've already had a dusting of snow or two recently, the snow last evening took me by surprise. A few flurries as I was leaving work so I thought I had plenty of time to run by the bank and youth center. Twenty minutes later the main road to my house was covered..how was that even possible? One moment I was praying, the next I was calling myself crazy for not coming straight home, and then I was overwhelmed with a grateful heart for my four wheel-drive. I have never been a confident driver in snow or ice. During the last huge snow of early 09, we realized my 4WD was no longer working but fixing it was going to be quite expensive so I waited. Thankfully, I had left my vehicle at a local service station on Thursday morning for them to take a look so I would know what parts I needed to order. One of the repairmen was able to reset my 4WD and it WORKED!!! and just in the nick of time!
Since my Christmas shopping is finished and I didn't have to work this weekend, I was looking forward to being snowed in! What a beautiful wonderland I had awakened to this morning! Irrestible! As I bundled up and went outside to take some pictures, I was amazed that as cold as it was, the snow was melting fast. It is definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!
Joy to you and yours ~ C ~

Presenting...the 2009 Christmas Card Collection only available here...at Clarissa's Corner. If you're looking for a unique card (limited edition) this holiday season, here are some of the pictures available for selection. There are beautiful christmas trees, angels, ornaments, a cross to remember the true reason for the season, slorious sunsets, and majestic mountains. One of my favorite scenes may seem exotic for a Christmas card but the moment I saw the waterfall surrounded by poinsettas, my breath was taken away. The card that has become quite meaningful this holiday season is actually a surpise. The picture of the nostalgic fireplace all decorated for the holidays comes in a card with the caption: Memory is a Photograph of the Heart. The surprise is how many hearts have been touched and that the card is being used to remember loved ones who have passed on this year. I am continuely amazed at how a simple picture can speak volumes without a single word being uttered.
There is a second set of Christmas photos as well. Some I have previewed in an earlier blog but here are ones who made the Christmas cut. Christmas just can't be Christmas without some pets to bring silly grins to our faces. They are just so cuddly cute, precious and their antics are too funny. So if you want to share a smile this Christmas, take a peak at Sassy, the Ferrets - Angel and Gilligan, a Christmas edition of the W.S. Elfine series plus the ducks and elk.
In the next few days, I hope to post pictures of the actual cards. If you would like to place in an order, just drop me a note. The cards are $3.00 each plus shipping and handling. Or maybe you would like to give greeting cards as gifts..if so, we have quite a selection available from thinking of you, birthdays, thank you, sympathy plus a host of quotes. Matching bookmarks are also available with either the greeting cards or the Christmas Card collection.
In all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, don't forget the Reason for the Season: Keep Jesus as the center of your Christmas celebrations.
Peace & Joy to you and yours! ~ C ~

Photography is a journey…every day…each subject…a new learning experience.
This past Saturday, the Central Ky Photography Group had a studio photography meet up! Although it was one of the smaller groups, there were still new faces! Once again, we had a “Super” model - Paula. She was incredibly patient and good natured enduring several hours of sitting in the “hot” seat.
As usual, I was feeling a little overwhelmed leaving the meet up. I wasn’t sure I had learned (or maybe “absorbed” is a better word) that much. There is so much to consider in studio photography: lighting, backdrops, shadows, poses, f-stops, shutter speeds, well, you get my meaning! Give me squirrels and dogs and hummingbirds any day! No matter how much I learn, I realize there is so much more to learn...it just never stops! :) (Sounds kind of like life!). But later that evening, as I recounted my day, I realized I garnered more information than I even knew!! So, whatever it is that you are learning about or trying to do, don’t give up! Just give your education a workout! Put into practice your principles as soon as possible.
The upside, my new friend and fellow photographer, Connie and I went to lunch!!
From the first time I met her, I thought this is a lady I would love to have as a friend! And lunch only confirmed that feeling! We talked for over two hours: about photography, family, traveling, this, that and, you know,” Girl Talk!” We could have talked forever!! I can hardly wait until after the Holidays for our next meet up!
Still, I was not quite ready to call it a day and head home! Who know how many sunny days we have left before Ole Man Winter arrives? Kentucky is chock-full of history around every corner. So, every time I come to Danville, I had been wanting to visit Constitution Square (hey, it sounds interesting!). But on my way there, I saw the sign – Fort Harrod only 10 miles. Hmm, when was the last time I had been to Fort Harrod? Could it be 15 years? How time flies! Let’s see if anything has changed.
As I walked around the 75 ft Osage Orange Tree, circa 18th century, my mind reflected back to my visit!! My family brought Nellie, a student from Bulgaria, who was staying with us. She had never seen Indians before so we took her see the Legend of Daniel Boone on her birthday! We took pictures all over that park and with the “Indians” of the play! What a great memory!
“The Roots of the Present Lie Deep Within the Past” - this quote on the wall of the cemetary rings so true!
As Kentucky celebrates the bicentennial Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy, I was glad to see preservation taking place. To be able to walk about the cabin where Lincoln’s parents were married…wow! What a walk through time. I strolled through the pioneer cemetery, noted to be the first “God’s Acre” of the Wilderness, but very few markers were left. But one marker that was left belonged to Ann McGinty who passed in 1815 but known to have brought the first spinning wheel to Kentucky. I had no idea what a hedge apple was as I don’t know that I have ever seen one before. I wanted to bring one home but wasn’t sure what it was so I was nervous about picking it up. They are such weird objects – who knew, they could have been leftovers from Halloween. I was not the only one enjoying the history and remembering the early settlers but was joined by a troop of boy scouts.
The sun was beginning to set as I headed back into Danville to visit Constitution Square. Do you realize that the original conventions leading to the Statehood of Kentucky took place in that square? A church sits there now as well as the first post office west of the Alleghenies. Fisher’s Row represents the first set of rental houses! I love history and scenic tours of behind the scenes. But, still, sometimes I am so amazed at the people who were so far ahead of their times…leading the way into the future!
One final stop: sunset at Cedar Creek Lake and what a beauty it was!
There’s no better way to end a blissful day. I was reminded, once again, just how great is our God! I love photography because it gives me a medium to attempt to record the artistry of my Majestic Creator. I can’t do the beauty justice but I can go back to that spot in time with just a glance and be taken back all over again. It was too funny…I was not the only photographer there enjoying the scenic beauty…Sandy, one of my fellow photographers and her husband, was there as well.
Take a deep breath and take a look around! Enjoy this moment! ~ C ~

As you may recall, back in the spring, I tried my first pet photo shoot. Poor “Brown Dog” surrounded by wild kids in a noisy room – let’s just say, she was not in her comfort zone!
Since Christmas is just around the corner, no line of greeting cards or picture gallery, could be considered complete without at least a couple of pet pictures. My friend, Sheryl, offered her pups for the photos. She is always rescuing animals and each one has a story to tell. Some are orphaned, some left on the side of the road, or maybe their families can’t afford their upkeep or children, who once begged for this pet, have lost interest – so many reasons why animals need a good home.
Although she answers to “Pup”, we have nicknamed the little white dog “Sassy”! She was rescued from a busy intersection chewing a on a dried up chicken bone. Now, she is totally attached to Sheryl and prefers plain cheeseburgers for dinner! What a pup’s life but isn’t she so photogenic! for a pup?
Brown Dog, on the other hand, still has a way to go! She just can’t help being afraid of everything! I was actually astonished when she came right to me to be petted! But having her picture taken is not too high on her favorite to-do list! I think she did so much better than the spring! We might make a model of her yet!
I certainly appreciate Sheryl for being a good sport, a great assistant and supplier of cheeseburgers for treats! When I do my next pet shoot, I know just who to call! Seriously, thanks a bunch!!
So do you need a picture for Christmas? Just send me an email and we will see what we can set up!!
Welcome to the Holiday Season! Just don’t forget the reason for the season in all the hustle and bustle!! Jesus is our Reason!

If you know anything about me at all, you know “cooking” is not where my talents die! Still each year, I enjoy attending the Taste of Living Holiday Cooking Show and it’s that time of year again.
On our way to the Centre, Jeanette and I stopped by the new children’s garden by the Pulaski Co Library. What a beautiful spot for a photo shoot or a hand’s on learning center? Flowers, Herbs, Shrubs, Ponds, Butterflies, Birds, Sea Serpents and Horses! Come spring’s arrival this will be a five star locale for children’s pictures! It is so well laid out and wonderfully landscaped! I am so glad we stopped to scout it out!
Onto the Center: After checking out the displays, signing up for give-a-ways, and grabbing a quick bite, Jeanette and I met up with Judy, Laura, and Marcy. My friend, Tawanna and her sister, Tammi, were also there! Let the good times begin!! A perfect girls' night out!! Oh, but wait..this event is not only for the ladies, there were quite a few gentlemen present as well! Chefs in the making! Ohhh la la!
Dana, our Taste of Living Culinary Specialist (a.k.a. Cook for the Evening but Culinary Specialist sounds so “Oui! Oui!” (Yes, it is an inside joke!)...but she has an inviting personality and a sense of humor that keeps you in stitches. She is well-informed with bits of trivia (Got a sore throat? Chew on the core of a pineapple and immediate healing – who knew? How Cool!) Dana definitely makes cooking a holiday spread look incredibly easy. It is cool that shops for all of the ingredients locally so it is doable! Not to put her too high on the cooking pedestal, it was a relief for the beater to act up and for her roll of dough to be not so perfect. Just maybe there is hope for us not so talented cooks yet.
The perfect recipe to end the evening: a table of good food surrounded by friends and laughter.

I wanted to take a moment to say Thank You to our veterans for their time of service. Where would our country be without the men and women who defend freedom every day...laying their all on the line? Not a day goes by without them making extreme sacrices...serving may be an honor not taken lightly by the troops but it is hard work all the same!!! Whenever I think of honor and respect, I think of my visits to Arlington Cemetery. Row upon row, line upon line, story after story of individuals and families who have lived to serve.
We salute you who have served and those who continue to serve. We support you and your families! May the Lord bless, protect and keep you!
Happy Veterans' Day!

I can hardly believe that seven months ago, I started this blog - a mixture of photography, traveling, family and the thoughts of my heart - all compiled in one spot. It has been an amazing journey! Probably even more amazing is the realization that it is still ongoing and growing and has become quite meaningful to me. Never in a million years would I have ever thought I would be writing in such a public journaling format. My writing and my photography has been a private, personal pleasure. Surely the Lord has brought me a long, long way from the shy girl I used to be.
But you asked for it..so I have come to a decision...from now on...this blog will be dedicated to my photography (which is growing by leaps and bounds) and my travels (diverse and spontaneous). Therefore, I present Clarissa's Corner - Photography and More...with a new and improved look!
Where does that leave "everything else"? I am so glad you asked...come check out my new blog: From the Heart of Clarissa's Corner! It is here you will find my posts considered to be more of an inspirational writing by sharing my spiritual travels along this road of life with the Lord, my family times, tributes, and anything else that might be on my heart.
http://theheartofclarissascorner.wordpress.com/
Of course, there will always be those posts which could fit here or there! So, keep coming back as I iron out all the details. I look forward to your feedback. Let me know if you like the new look and new posts! I am always up for suggestions in this new chapter of maintaining not one but two blogs! :) Exiting days are ahead!

Today is my best friend and cousin, Jeanette's birthday!!I would be very remiss not to share with you how much she means to me!!!
No matter what I want to do or where I want to go, she's up for the adventure! Though we were separated by miles when we were young, before the days of myspace, facebook, and IM, after her family's move to Kentucky, we connected all over again. We have seen each other through some hard, difficult times and yet been there for the good, the joyous, and the rolling on the floor at our own craziness times. It's remarkable how many interests we share like our love for the Lord, travel, good music, christian books, and taking pictures. We always get so tickled when people from around the world think we are twins. We really don't think we look (or act) anything alike! We have been blessed to travel through the United States, and Canada but my most memorable trip was Italy. She has been a source of encouragement as I walk through new doors of opportunity! She is a great example for overcoming the odds and has shown tremendous strength and endurance in completing her nursing/RT degree. (I totally would have given up and changed fields!)
So, if you are blessed, as I am to know her and call her friend, then your life has been enriched!! Family ties may make us cousins but the Lord has made us sisters!
A most blessed, wonderful and happy birthday to you Jeanette! May the coming year open your own doors of dreams come true! Love ya!

Since going on my latest photo rampage, I’ve been meaning to take a trip to the Levi Jackson State Park just outside of London, Ky. Then the London office needed help at their auction in Corbin yesterday so it provided the perfect opportunity – the best of both worlds. (And don’t forget...this is still the same weekend that I am forcing myself to take a break from stress :)).
Let me just tell you that the Grist Mill at the park is surrounded by fall beauty everywhere. Of course, everyone else had the same idea, families were everywhere taking pictures, but it was cool! It felt great just to walk around the water, taking pictures of the ducks, enjoying the moment and the beauty. The oranges, yellows and red were breath-taking. If I’d had the time, a book, and a warmer jacket…I could have sat for hours soaking up the peace. Yes, I probably took more pictures I needed but I was being my own boss.
As I walked around the pond to the grist mill, I came upon an unexpected surprise. I should have realized a grist mill requires water. But so many historical buildings are moved from their original locations to parks for preservation that I had no idea there was a mini falls ‘behind’ the mill. I kept hearing water but the pond was calm and the huge drain only had a little trickle. As I leaned over the railing edge, I could hardly believe my eyes. I know I gasped and then I was tickled pink. Wow! What a scene!! Colorful leaves, flowing water, old log building, mill stones, ducks…what more could a girl ask for? Not one thing!
The grist mill is now on my top ten list of Kentucky sites to photograph more often! I will definitely be back! (Just so you know, I didn’t have a top ten list until now! :))After lunch and quick stop for shopping at Catos, I was tired but satisfied with my day.
But photography is contagious. So, later, on my way to the youth center, I stopped by the cave near my home to try to capture it. Then later, as I had to run one of the boys to his house to pick up his skateboard (what skater leaves his skateboard at home? ), we took some pictures of the sunset and geese at Lake Linville!! Have I exceeded my photo quota for this weekend? Maybe but the one thing I do know is that to shoot again…I must download some pictures for sure!
Enjoy the beauty of each season…joy 2 u! “C”

The past few weeks have been so crazy hectic that I have felt like the puppy on the lake. From a distance, he looks like he is smoothly sailing along but take a look underneath the water…his little feet are moving and getting it! Joining up with the photography group, church conference, Bittersweet festival prep, fall auction season in full swing, auction training sessions, photo sessions, unexpected trips out of town, illness and, then, the loss of our Aunt Dorothy…my schedule (and my emotions) have been up and down like a roller coaster. Totally wore out even though there were some precious memories made and doors of opportunities opened. I don’t regret one moment BUT…there comes that final moment when you finally have to hold up your hand and shout “Stop!” Time-out! And that’s where I found myself Friday morning! I needed a break from all the pressures, responsibility and expectations. (I’m no energizer bunny!)
So I texted Jeanette and said do you work tonight? Let’s go to Chick-Fil-A, visit the new Christian bookstore and find Silver Creek Falls! As you know by now, my “twin” cousin is always up for good food and shopping. At 4:59 p.m., I was past ready to leave work! Finally, we were on our way. But plans changed… first, we stopped by Lake Reba to see if the leaves had changed yet. Nope, still ordinary there but we did find a heron and lots of ducks! Ducks everywhere! Then instead of Chick-Fil-A, we went to Outback for some aussie cheese fries dipped in ranch, warm bread smothered in butter, you get the picture.
Storms were on the horizon as we finished dinner but I was still hoping to find the Silver Creek falls before it got too dark. I had no idea what to expect but a visitor to my booth at the Bittersweet said they were a must-see, must-photograph site. Of course, I’ve been itching to find them. After several miles, I thought we had passed them, the road was getting more narrow and a little scary with the ominous storm clouds (felt like we were in a Twilight scene) when suddenly off to the right there they were. It was too muddy to pull in so Jeanette parked on the side of the road while I went through the mud (yes – through the mud!) to the falls. Although small, they are long and totally gorgeous with the day’s rains. Worth the trip and effort, in my opinion, but I definitely need to make a trip back in the daytime! I was a little nervous down there by myself when I had just been thinking of Twilight on our drive down…if you get my meaning!!
Mission accomplished – then back to Richmond where we shopped at the bookstore until closing time! Then a stop by Culver’s for a Custard Sundae topped with raspberries, raspberry sauce and whip cream. A fantastic way to end the evening!!
Take a moment for yourself this day… “C”

Since Kevin and Donna moved to North Carolina, it’s so hard to have one-on-one time with anyone person during visits whether in Kentucky or North Carolina. So, this past weekend, when Donna agreed to go with me to my basic photography class, I was pretty pumped! I figured it would be overwhelming based upon my experience the first few weeks. But I also know both Kevin and Donna enjoying taking pictures as much as I do even if they don’t have as much time what with jobs, home-schooling, and three boys.
Up early (a re-curing theme with this photography group), hitting the road, enjoying the trip between Danville and home. We had a good drive, talking about this and that. The Cedar Creek Lake was absolutely gorgeous with the sun peeping up but the lake and surrounding trees covered in fog and mist with the lone fisherman out in his boat. (No pictures – I was the driver.) We arrived in plenty of time to introduce Donna to my new friends, at the least the ones I knew as there were so many new faces in the group.

As we made a speedy journey back to Mt. Vernon, I remembered Jaden’s love of airplanes and the one sitting in the park at Crab Orchard. Detour and a chance to practice what we had learned that morning – a can’t miss combination! Although I knew the helicopter was there, I didn’t realize there were veterans, eagle and ten commandment commemorations as well. A pretty cool little park in town but hidden out of sight.

Thanks Donna for that special time together and for all of your support. Thanks also to my brother for packing up the van and the boys so we could go on to class!
Bless you for reading my posts…. “C”

Kevin, Donna, and the boys were in Kentucky last weekend on another unplanned, unexpected visit. But we will take their visits whenever we can get one! Six states in less than twenty-four hours, they were exhausted and wanted to do nothing but hang out and relax on Saturday. So we ate, played Boggle, Scrabble, and I-Spy for hours, and watched Monsters vs. Aliens way too many times.
I remembered the re-enactment at Camp Wildcat was going on this weekend and I was truly hoping to get to visit as I had never been to you before and it was so close but then plans changed so I put it on the to-do list for another time. I could tell Donna was getting bored so I mentioned Camp Wildcat to her. But it was a rainy, cold day so I didn’t think much about it. Then on the spur of the moment, we decided to go – first, just us girls – then the boys, too!!
Since it was spur of the moment, we arrived just as Saturday’s battle was ending! Oops – our timing always seems to be a bit off! We got to see some of the troops, visit the mountain lookout, and see the horseman in action! A bit disappointing but okay! Or so I thought!
Later that evening, Dawson had a “moment” – the lamest day, no battle, boring – boo hoo! What to do? I had photography class early the next morning and they were heading home! Do I sacrifice my class but what if they don’t even stay? Personally, I had already been torn between the two – learning to take awesome pics or go take some awesome Kentucky pics. (Of course, the verdict is still out on Dawson’s “moment” – did he really want to watch the battle or spend a few more hours in Kentucky with his grandparents? Hmmm!)
Compromise can be a wonderful thing! Needless to say, Donna and I arrived home from class (another blog) just in time to get in the vans to head to the camp. Grandma and Grandpa even went with us! I know my brother wanted to get on the road to start the long drive home because he is just like my dad in that respect! Trips are okay but when it’s time to go home, it’s time to go! I, on the other hand (and Donna and Jeanette), want to delay the arrival at home and back to routine as long as possible!
I had no idea the re-enactment was such a huge deal. Locals and people from all over were there. I knew so many people that I was just amazed. (In case you’ve not realized, my family is not always at the top of our game when it comes to being prepared – of course, we are usually adventuring to first time events with no idea of what to expect!) So we sat on the cold ground on the front row – no chairs, no blankets, how crazy! But we got caught up in the excitement so we didn’t feel the effects…until later. I had to move on down from my family because where they sat – in every picture would have been the huge yellow rope! Come on now folks!!! I am missing photography class, I have to have something good to show for it!!!
We thought Keagan would have been scared when the cannons started booming away. But, no – Grandpa and Keagan had gotten some kettle corn and he was in popcorn heaven. (For the record, his favorite food is popcorn!) So we girls were jumping and squealing when the blasting was going on but not the boys! The Calvary came charging by with pistols blazing and swords sparing with the frontiersman. Then, the soldiers on foot – bearing flags and marching to the beat of the drummer boy (or girl, in this case). I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the south. They were bedraggled, few uniforms, fewer guns – using whatever they could find to fight for their homes, their rights, and their livelihood as they knew it at that time. They were up against big guns and trained soldiers in resplendent blue uniforms! We had a moment where we really wanted to support the south but yet oppose slavery. It’s amazing the emotions and thoughts that well up within you as you watch the battle. I could just imagine the heartache as brother fought against brother, father against son, friend against friend. Then, united at the end, tending to each other’s wounded and honoring the fallen of both side as the bugle played in the background.
The history of our nation came alive in a very dramatic way. Yes, it was fun and exciting! But it also reminded me of the sacrifices given throughout the history of our nation. Time and time again battles rage, some won, some lost, for freedom, for independence, some for ourselves, some between ourselves, and some for those of other nations who cannot fight for themselves. We are a blessed nation, once founded upon a love for God and country. But where do we find ourselves today? What kind of history are we writing today? Is it still founded on a love for God and country? Will our children and grandchildren be proud to say “I’m an American”? Truly, only God knows!
The re-enactment wrapped up with prayer and a speech by Abraham Lincoln. The boys had an opportunity to take a picture with President Lincoln and were so not even impressed. In fact, they said the whole experience was okay!!! Me, I’m still not over it! But the boys had to have their confederate caps! Evidently wearing them all the way home!
It was cool to see some of our classmates involved in the re-enactment with their own children. I think participation would make history come even more alive. Jeanette was telling me of one of the guys and I asked which side was he on? Her response – The dark side! Maybe we are the ones in need of a history lesson!

The Rockcastle Co Extension office sponsored a day of play and good health downtown Mt. Vernon one sunny Sunday afternoon. I arrived a bit late but there were still plenty of happenings: cloggers in the streets, foot races, give-aways, music, blood pressure testing, and the ROTC obstacle course. But I think the ones who enjoyed the day the most were the skateboarders and BMXers.
Community Trust Bank allowed them to skate their parking lot and skate they did. Skaters were all over that parking lot, showing off their latest tricks and flips, trying new things, chatting, laughing, making new friends and connecting with old ones, and games of S-K-A-T-E were happening everywhere. Then during the final few minutes of the day, Main Street was opened up to the skaters and bikers, boy oh boy, did these guys and girls take to the street. They were so excited to get a chance to skate without getting into trouble. I would have thought they would be exhausted after all the stunts in the parking lot but, no, they must have gotten a second wind. Up and down the street, doing ollies, flips and jumps or just skating by with the wind in their hair. It was truly enjoyable to watch their excitement and kind of contagious as well. I wanted to get out there and skate but, thankfully, I had the good sense not to give in to the moment!
Although the Main Street was re-opened to traffic, several hours later on our way to church, we stopped by to check on them, they were still going strong. I would say if success was defined by a good time then a good time was had by all! This afternoon provided the perfect opportunity for the kids to have some good, clean fun here in Mt. Vernon. I truly hope we see continued community support for future events.

A lot of hard work, long hours and worry go into preparation for the annual Bittersweet Festival. Each year, I find myself involved in a different project or craft, such crocheted items, twisted animal balloons, or fund raisers for the youth center/skate park, and every time I say “Never Again!”
And here I am again this year – presenting my first public display of “Clarissa’s Corner – Photography and More”. The more being greeting cards, bookmarks, laminated prints and, at the last minute, even framed prints. Preparation involved many hours of focused labor that I (and my schedule) are still recovering from.

So many people helped make “Clarissa’s Corner” a possibility because I surely would never, NEVER, have done it on my own. I’d like to take a moment to say thank you and hopefully, not forget too many: First, thank you to Sheryl for providing and encouraging the idea and providing the perfect booth spot in front of the youth center; my mom for using her creative eye to help me match the right picture with just the right card, for making tassels, assisting me as we framed, and laminating and laminating; my dad for building the best wooden greeting card displays a girl could ask for and promoting my cards everywhere he goes (along with his skeeters, of course!); my Granny for adding the “feminine finishing” touches to the displays and pitching in where ever she could. Jeanette, my willing co-traveler, who spent her one weekend off in forever to keep me company at the booth, helping me put up, keep up and tear down. Chrissy – for making my awesome signs; Darren and Danetta – for the use of their tent (a life saver!), to Matthew and Danny for helping me setup the tent, wind proofing it, resetting it up and taking it down. (The winds Saturday morning were bad but it certainly could have been much worse. Thankfully, there are no pictures or videos of that scene.) Thanks guys – I don’t know what I would have done without your help. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the kids and teens of the youth center – some kept us company when things were slow, checking in often to see how things were going, helping setup and tear down, coming to my rescue during the windy bursts – each one showing support in your own special way…I will never forget it.
My final thank you goes out to all my friends, family and co-workers who have supported me for years – loving my pictures and encouraging me to share them. I appreciate everyone who stopped by the booth, whether just checking in on us or supporting us – some of you even made sacrifices to show your support. I am just totally overwhelmed by all that has transpired in such a short time! I guess it’s officially Official – Clarissa’s Corner is open for business.
Bittersweet is a good time to see old friends or make new ones. I think my favorite part is the Parade. Fire trucks pulling out all the bells and whistles, so loud your ears hurt. Seeing so many youth participating is really cool – whether marching with the ROTC, riding on the floats, driving motorcycles, or promoting their church youth groups. The old fashioned cars, horses and wagons are a delight as well. But to be popular with the crowd, there is one thing you must remember: Candy, and lots of it!
A new addition to the festival program this year was the “Dog Show”.
Big dogs, little dogs, pedigree and mutt, all came together! What an eclectic collection – some were too cute, some so ugly they were adorable, and some huge enough to offer pony rides. I think this event will be around again.
I do enjoy the festival and but I am surely glad that it only comes once a year!
